"Dedicated hardware for network security is winning converts for three main reasons.
First, it improves network performance because encryption-based security processes can bog down a network. The DES (Data Encryption Standard), for example, can require as much as 25 times more processing power than a regular IP packet, according to Infonetics Research Inc., in San Jose, Calif.
Second, because the technology is so complex and at the same time increasingly strategic, administrators aren't willing to risk problems that can arise when integrating new software into existing products.
Third, some network managers believe it's simply safer to keep encryption information separate from the rest of the network....
"Thomas Haigh, chief technologist at software vendor Secure Computing Corp., in Roseville, Minn. "The lower [in the network stack] that you can put a security mechanism, the harder it is to bypass."
How low can you go? Well, you can't get much lower than the wavemeter! We are onto the right track.
