Microsoft has an Internet alliance with France Telecom and
is involved in several cultural and educational projects.
The deal with TMM will give Microsoft access to direct
television know-how and decoders -- essential to get television
on the web -- while TMM will get access to Microsoft's Windows
CE operating system -- essential to get the web on television.
TMM made a first half profit of 64 million francs ($10.8
million) against a loss of 538 million in the previous year. For
the full year it expects its sales to rise by some three percent
to 39 billion.
"We should be close to break-even at the year-end," Breton
told the newspaper Les Echos. TMM still has some 5.6 billion
francs in debt which a company spokesman called "bearable."

On Thursday evening, the finance finistry announced it would
sell almost a third of Thomson Multimedia (TMM) , to
France's Alcatel , Microsoft of the U.S.,
Japan's NEC <6701.T> and the Direct TV unit of Hughes
Electronics ....
