Mariner,

Compaq has a major advantage over Intel in the 64-bit arena right now. Merced has been delayed by "at least" another 18 months. There is a lot of development going on ITO Alpha and 64-bit NT. I believe that if Compaq gets it's marketing team into gear and does a better job of promoting Alpha, we will have a winner. The Alpha is a huge performer and with decent marketing and R&D focus has the ability to capture a substantial portion of the high end Enterprise market. Roll on Compaq ProLiant Alpha servers! No reason to divest.

Commenting on today's lack of glamour regarding the Alpha, it is a pure result of DEC's (lack of) marketing for the product. Someone once said that if DEC was marketing Sushi, they would advertise it as "cold, raw, dead fish". (Not sure of the exact quotation, but it says it all...)

Compaq sales people are actively pitching the 18 month lead we have over Intel Merced to their clients. Look for mare activity in this arena.

Regards,

Harrigan
