Take a look at the S&P 500 in July 1996. The behavior is very similar but much less dramatic in terms of the scale of fluctuations. Eventually there is a final spike up and then a collapse. On the most similar events I have seen in individual stocks is the collapse experienced by Apple computer in September 1997. This would have to be my leading scenario now. The news from Japan looks worse and worse.

Dow 1929 and 1987 look superficially similar on an even grander scale.
