I'm neutral on the Schwab example, frankly. I don't know whether NC's even existed when the decision to deploy NT was made. Clearly people are spending money on both PC's and NC's -- more on PC's right now, probably at least partly because of familiarity and market exposure. Nobody expects this to happen overnight (do they?). Look how long it took Windows to catch on. (By the way, I think Windows ultimately caught on more because of device independence than the GUI, and NC's and Java are a continuation of a progression in that direction, so may succeed for the same underlying reason.)

I stand by my assertion that a switch from Windows 3.1 to NT COULD be a stopgap measure. If the hardware in place will support it and is fairly homogeneous, the change might not cost that much. Windows 3.1's shortcomings could have made change imperative. I don't think the original poster is trying to "manage NC PR" at all, so I don't accept the premise of your question.

One thing that operates in favor of contrarians is that they can generally buy stock more cheaply for the same earnings power than can mainstreamers. Buy you're right -- either side (or even both) can be wrong.

JMHO. Not intended as investment advice.
