Monday August 3, 12:14 am Eastern Time Matsushita Elec says to increase DVD production TOKYO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd said on Monday it will more than triple output of digital video discs (DVDs) at a U.S. subsidiary in Torrance, California, by September. Matsushita has already started increasing DVD output at wholly owned subsidiary Panasonic Disc Service Corp, aiming at production of two million discs per month from the previous 600,000, a Matsushita spokesman said.
The electronics giant also plans to raise output of DVD players at a plant in Osaka, western Japan, to a monthly 100,000 units, up from a total of 400,000 units in all of 1997, he said.
The increases were spurred by stronger demand in the United States and Southeast Asia and come despite weaker than expected sales in Japan, the spokesman said.
Matsushita's Chinese unit, China Hualu Matsushita Video Co Ltd, has also begun trial production of DVD players and the company plans to decide this year whether to boost the current monthly output of 1,000 units to full production.
Matsushita aims to hold 40 percent of the world's DVD player market, which is estimated at three million units for the fiscal year 1998, the spokesman said.
