August 3, 1998 6:02 AM EDT
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1998--Brad Mattson, CEO of Mattson Technology, Inc., a global supplier of advanced process equipment used to manufacture semiconductors, (NASDAQ:MTSN), received the San Jose Business Journal's Third Annual Silicon Valley Entrepreneurial Award.
Mattson was honored as the recipient in the Technology Entrepreneur category at the awards dinner held at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel on June 18.
"It is an honor to be considered in such distinguished company, with so many exciting entrepreneurs in the Valley," stated Mattson at the banquet. "There are so many people to thank for their support and encouragement, but none more so than my wife, Diane. I wouldn't have been able to accomplish what I have, nor what I hope to achieve in the future if it wasn't for her support."
Mattson began his career as business manager of the chemical vapor deposition group of Applied Materials. After a brief stint spearheading LFE Technology, he co-founded Novellus Systems in 1983, which he rapidly developed into one of the fastest growing companies in the history of the semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry. Mattson's second start-up, Mattson Technology, eclipsed Novellus' growth records -- booking 25% quarter-to-quarter revenue increases for nine consecutive quarters. With the IPO of Mattson Technology in 1994, he joined the handful of entrepreneurs to take public two semiconductor capital equipment companies.
According to the Business Journal, nominees for the award are selected based on entrepreneurial spirit and performance in the technology industry. Enlisting the services of David Sandretto, the executive director of the Second Harvest Food Bank as judge coordinator, the Business Journal selected an impartial group of judges from Silicon Valley businesses and San Jose State University. In conjunction with the awards event, the San Jose Business Journal issued a special Awards edition presenting this year's recipients.
Mattson Technology's Recent Acquisitions And Design Breakthroughs Continuing in the tradition of entrepreneurial accomplishments, Mattson Technology recently announced an agreement to acquire Concept Systems Design, a global supplier of epitaxial (Epi) systems. This strategic move enables Mattson Technology to enter the Epi arena, delivering their productivity advantages to manufacturers in this highly competitive market sector. The newly formed Concept-HTP Division has an installed base of 400 systems and allows Mattson more expansive penetration into the front-end of the semiconductor manufacturing market.
The recent SEMICON West '98 in July served as the debut for Mattson's 300mm Aspen III Strip and CVD Systems. Based upon the production-proven Aspen II platform, the Aspen III delivers added throughput and cost benefits to the 300mm arena, remaining true to Mattson's mission of ensuring maximum customer productivity. Independent marathon testing has shown the Aspen III Strip tool to process more than 200 wafers per hour (wph), while the CVD System out-produces the competition with a run-rate of 180 wph. SEMICON West was the U.S. premiere for both tools. In May 1998, the first Aspen III Strip tool was shipped to SEMICONDUCTOR 300, the Siemens/Motorola joint venture in Dresden, Germany. Mattson Technology plans to begin shipping the Aspen III CVD System starting in August 1998.
