Just thinking out loud here....

If this is the case, perhaps it might be worth it to simply buy the appropriate number of rights to cover that part of the trade in order to eliminate it from the equation while staying short the stock. This would probably only have the virtue of convenience, i.e. clearing up a messy situation, but I don't know if it would be worth the possible extra commission, etc.

Interesting problem.
