The news released today should be VERY good for SE. The practical problem holding EDI back heretofore has been that not enough of your trading partners had the capability. Now with this capability there is no reason that any company positioned well enough could not insist the trading partners use EDI (and thereby save the client tons of money). Looks like SE will also get a share, as they should, of the conversion charge. SE takes the initiative as it should, in this case instead of the client. Excerpt follows:

"With fax-to-EDI, a hard copy of a document like an invoice is converted to EDI standard format by a service bureau aligned with Sterling Commerce and placed in a trading partner's COMMERCE:Network mailbox. The service bureau provides document verification, data verification and data scrubbing to ensure the integrity of the information being transmitted.

".... The fax-to-EDI capability complements an existing EDI-to-fax feature, which allows the larger trading partner to send purchase orders and other documents in EDI format to COMMERCE:Network. The documents are then converted to a print format and faxed to the smaller trading partner.

As part of the Media Conversion Program, Sterling Commerce offers comprehensive implementation services to assess the EDI-readiness of trading partners and help them begin using the program quickly and easily. ......."
