Silicon-on-Insulator breakthrough. See: maccentral.com I'm surprised the techies in this group aren't making a bigger deal out of this. MacCentral quotes Electrical Engineering magazine as saying, "The technology could give IBM's RS/6000 workstations and AS/400 servers-as well as Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh line-a significant boost in the market against more-mainstream systems using Intel's Pentium and Merced processors." Coming from a non-Mac-oriented magazine, this statement alone is enough for me to sit up and take notice. Between this, copper processing, and AltiVec, the already-large gap between PowerPC and Intel looks to turn into a gaping chasm. They're talking 1 Ghz machines in production mode 2-3 years out, just about the time the initial Merced chips will limp their way out into the public. One has to believe that a company as large as Intel has some kind of trick up its sleeve to recover from these "setbacks," but I'll be darned if I know what it is. The Merced delay highlights the fact that they are not yet close to doing what it takes to even the playing field. John, if you're looking for a company to short, I'd be taking a serious look at Intel. Between K6/Cyrix on the low-end and the PowerPC from left field, Intel looks to get crushed over the next several years. Altivec + copper/SOI G4 + OS X + sleek industrial design = _increased market share_ Andrew--10% by 2000!!!
