Can't help with the Island stuff as I'm new at this also. However, I can offer some help with the ISP. I've tried several and, while I know it depends on the area you live, I have found the GTE ISP to be very good as far as connection reliability. I've been demotrading with only a 56K modem and have not lost a connection yet.
In fact, the whole month I've had the GTE ISP, I've only lost my connection once and I think that had to do with using PC Anywhere. So far, I'm at 56k, but am getting an ISDN line later this month (takes forever for US West to install your lines!)
Anyway, good luck! If you discover any insights into the Island trading, please let me know. I'm making little cheat cards to put next to my computer and keeping execution notes as I'm finding the ECN selection, etc., to be the most confusing aspect of daytrading.
