Cable modems are connected to a head-end system, which consolidates a number of users onto a common line that eventually passes to the Internet. Because users share bandwidth on the head-end system, congestion problems could occur if too many accessed the network at the same time -- a common problem for dial-up modem users. To ease congestion, cable Internet access suppliers store frequently requested Web sites and Usenet newsgroups on a server at their head-end. Storing data locally lowers the amount of traffic that moves to the Internet and eases backbone bottlenecks. "When I first received my service, I was warned that the performance would slow once the cable company signed up customers," Plante said. "That just hasn't happened." Hiram
