Lycos Acquires GuestWorld, Leading Services Site With a 3.6 Reach, for $3.9 Million; Largest Provider of Free Online Guestbook Services Strengthens Personal Publishing
WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 1998--Lycos, Inc., (NASDAQ:LCOS), "Your Personal Internet Guide," today announced that it has acquired Sunnyvale, Calif.-based GuestWorld, the Web's largest provider of free online guestbook services, for $3.9 million, paid in stock. GuestWorld is ranked the eighth most popular Web services site with a 3.6 reach (Media Metrix, 6/98.)
GuestWorld's guestbook service allows visitors to register and comment on a person's homepage and automatically compiles visitors' e-mail addresses, making it easy for a homepage owner to stay in touch with guests, respond to comments, and inform them of site updates. GuestWorld is now the exclusive provider of guestbook services on Lycos' Tripod (www.tripod.com), and will also continue to be available for free to homepage builders across the Web at guestworld.tripod.lycos.com. The acquisition will immediately increase Tripod's targeted advertising inventory.
"The GuestWorld acquisition represents the latest enhancement to Lycos' growing pool of homepage building tools and further distinguishes the Lycos network as the premier Web community," said Bob Davis, president and CEO of Lycos. "This is another significant step in the Lycos move to be the leading online service."
"GuestWorld is a clear leader in the Web services marketplace, and we expect its particular services to deliver tremendous value to Tripod users as well as contribute positively to our overall growth strategy," said Bo Peabody, CEO and co-founder of Tripod. "As guestbooks foster two-way communication between site builders and visitors, we expect these services will encourage repeat traffic."
"Joining the Lycos family gives us the marketing, technology and resources to continue to offer the best guestbook services possible, and is a highly effective way of introducing these services to the most active and creative personal publishers on the Web," said Steve Mack, co-founder of GuestWorld. "Our guestbooks are a valuable addition to Tripod's already outstanding collection of tools and resources for personal publishing."
GuestWorld will continue to operate out of its Sunnyvale office and Mack will become the product manager for Guestworld, reporting to Tripod vice president of marketing Scott Walker.
