Until the advent of horizontal drilling, the Austin Chalk was considered a "plumb ornery" drill by many Texas explorers. Many initial vertical drilling explorations came to naught, and were not very exploitable even when hitting a (usually vertical or near-vertical) fracture. The oil was "goddammit supposed to be there," but vertical drilling in most cases was not economical. In earlier days, the Chalk also seems to have been difficult to seismic accurately due to various factors, but new techniques have improved the seismic accuracy.
