Read my lips (metaphorically): Amazon.com sees the future and that future is a highly competitive environment in which a primary funnel for sales of commodity products is through web shop bots. Also the trend of Portals towards providing and formating more useful content including shop-bots and direct marketing tie-ins means that there is an increasing threat that Amazon.com and other e-tailers will be forced to spend whatever profits they might make in advertising and tie-in fees. Since there is no way to beat these emerging trends, Amazon.com might as well try to join in if they are to retain their mass-market, high-profile focus.

Now Amazon's competitors will include not only Barnes & Noble and Borders, but increasingly, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Netscape, and other portal sites.

I have seen the future . . . and it is VERY price competitive.
