Well this thread is back in the "Hot List". The following charts give some historical perspective on the current market sell off. They show how many stocks are hitting 52 week high or lows on any given day, with the corresponding NYSE index price graphed below. I find the 1992-94 historical chart to be most similar to today's situation. I have also included the 1987 chart for further comparison.
