re: geekism... A call for help.
So I had my Dell Pentium II 233 for the requisite 6 months and I needed an upgrade. The 100mhz 440BX chipset just came out, and I wanted to a) see if I could overclock my components and b) lay the groundworks for my upgrade path. I bought myself an Abit BX6 ATX motherboard.
Since I thought everybody had standardized on the ATX architecture, swapping out the motherboard should be no problem for a old hand like myself. And everything went fine, until I had to connect my power switch. My power switch?!??!!
You old geezers who've messed around inside the standard PC case know that there are all sorts of two-line wires connecting various case LEDs and buttons to the motherboard. No biggie. Only thing was, that the Dell/Intel motherboard has this neat OEM feature where all the little wires are bundled into a 8x2 cable (it looks sort of like a mini-IDE cable). I guess it would be great for the Dell assemblers, for they only have to plug A into B, rather than A, B, C, D into E, F, G, H.
Only problem is, I can't connect this damn gizmo into my new motherboard. I tried going to radio shack, bought some circuit wires, and attempted to hot-wire the incompatible plugs. For reasons that are beyond me, I still can't manage to get this thing going.
The new motherboard has been sitting quietly in the side of the room for a while now. Hrmph. |
