I think they are trying to maintain an impartial distance between the company and the researchers so that there are not suggestions of bias. If you think about it, alot of Hirschman's research is tainted because he was paid, in part, with stock options. Thus, it was to his benefit to have favorable results. If ADVR wants to take the next step to the big leagues then they can't affort any suggestion that they are influencing the researchers. At least that is my take on why they are keeping their distance.
