I used to work on an AAPL back in grade school but for the past few years (way after grade school) I've been using a WinTel machine. I immediately had problems that were more associated with Compaq (NEVER buy one!!) than Windows. However, since the chip, motherboard and everything else was replaced - think I got a lemon or what! - I haven't had any problems. Yes, I'll admit that the system crashes on me more than I would like but I don't have to worry about losing massive amounts of info b/c I "save" all the time. I have to say the ONLY reason that I cannot convert to an Apple is because of software and compatibility with my friends' files. Also I still don't see why prices should be higher on Apples than competing WinTel boxes. Apple should realize that it is definitely on the defensive and should price accordingly. They should do something like what Netscape did in order to get developers to write software for the platform. Make it as easy and profitable as possible. I realize that this is a case of the chicken and the egg but consumers will not convert en mass without assurances that: 1) They can use their files from work and from friends at home and vice versa. Interoperability is the key! 2) Software will be developed that will not just compete, but will in fact beat MS. 3) Price competition is here to stay. Get with the program. 4) They won't be caught on the wrong side of this Betamax/VHS shootout. Like here, Betamax had the better technology but lost the battle. Let's hope we've leaned something.
I personally hate Microsoft and I belive that if things don't change MSFT will be divided into Internet, Software, OS (yes, apart from software and internet) Groups. On the corporate level millions could be saved in maintenance costs and time by using Apple OS over Win but as of now the software for corporations like those on Wall St. (where I work) are primarily Win OS based. Also, for the small individual user who doesen't need the power (most people don't need the power of a high end Pentium or a PPC) there's no reason I know of to pay $1,300 when you can now pay 30% less and still get everything you need. I really do hope that the situation changes so that I'll be able to convert back to Apple. I liked grade school.
PS I may not own an Apple computer but I love the stock!!! Go AAPL!
Good Luck All, Jon |
