Goodnoise is one company I intend to stay well away from.

The business model here is to sign up independent artists and sell their music on the net. N2K (http://www.n2k.com) have been trying this for over a year using Liquid Audio (http://www.liquidaudio.com) technology and the revenue is negligible (See their site emod.com). Despite the popularity of pirated digital music, users have simply not demonstrated any willingness as yet to purchase digital music.

Moreover, the major labels (with whom Goodnoise are competing) are extremely slow in their willingness to popularize digital music. There are security issues and a lot of important relationships at stake (not the least of which is their extensive distributor and retailer networks)

Small record labels come and go all the time, and at 99c per song and a tried and as yet, unproven business model, there is a tremendous amount of work to be done.

Rick

PS From the Goodnoise website :
"An Internet Record Company is a company that finds the best music available by going to clubs, showcases, and concerts, and by receiving submissions from lawyers, managers and other business associates."

In any case, it sounds like its going to be a lot of fun for their experienced management team.
