That's an interesting observation. My experience is different. I've done consulting work in environments for the last 8 years that were sometimes Sun-only shops and sometimes mixed Sun/MS environments (Sun servers/MS desktops, the Sun servers tend to scale better at the enterprise level).

In ALL cases with Sun products, uptime was typically measured in months. It was extraordinary that the O/S died taking a machine with it. Sure, Netscape hiccupped (4.0) every once in a while.

In the MS world, uptime is measured in hours. Not days. Not weeks. Certainly not months. Sure things like Office 97, Outlook, etc are nice and wonderful. But, I sure hate that big blue screen NT shoves at you about once a day. It's pretty ugly when the O/S takes down the whole machine. And I sure hate it when I ask my MS certified techies about that big blue screen and they say "oh yeah, with NT 4, ya gotta reboot the thing about once a day".

I'll take Sun's uncompetitive but reliable junk over MS' pretty but totally buggy s/w anyday. I get paid to get things done, not reboot servers.

Even the move from SunOS to Solaris was a complete fiasco that almost ended this company.

It was CAS, not Solaris that nearly took down Sun...
