Has anyone heard anything about a Compaq/AMD alliance to integrate Alpha and AMD chips in a single box? I heard this on a PaineWebber conference call yesterday, and had also heard a similar theory put forth in an earlier PW call (before the Compaq/Digital merger was finalized). The analyst (Walter Winnitzki) was quite fuzzy on the details, and it sounded frankly a bit wacky to me, but they seem to be convinced there 's something to it. The objective, if I understand their reasoning, would be to make Alpha an even more plausible threat to Merced by giving Alpha boxes compatibility with X86 applications.
