Imation Commercializes Matchprint Laser Proof System

OAKDALE, MINN. (Aug. 5) BUSINESS WIRE -Aug. 5, 1998--

Presstek PEARLhdp now available; Creo Trendsetter

available for September delivery

Imation Corp. (NYSE: IMN) today announced full availability of its
groundbreaking Matchprint Laser Proof system for digital halftone
proofing for computer-to-plate (CTP) workflows.

The new system includes Imation Matchprint Laser Proof digital halftone
media and Presstek's recently introduced PEARLhdp halftone digital
proofing system. Additionally, Imation Matchprint Laser Proof is
available with Creo's Trendsetter Spectrum and Proofsetter Spectrum for
delivery in September and October, respectively. The Presstek system is
available now from authorized Imation graphic arts distributors and
Sakurai distributors. The Creo systems are now available through Creo
and Heidelberg. The Presstek PEARLhdp, Creo Trendsetter Spectrum and
Proofsetter Spectrum are the first IR thermal laser exposure devices to
be qualified to run Imation's Matchprint Laser Proof media.

According to Imation officials, certification of both companies'
products will enable a broad spectrum of users - from the largest
commercial printers to proofing specifiers, production managers, and
designers in ad agencies, graphic design firms and corporate graphic
design departments - to reap the benefits of digital halftone
technology.

The Matchprint Laser Proof system addresses the need in CTP systems for
contract proofs of digital files and to get presses to color faster,
allowing printers and prepress shops to obtain a true digital halftone
proof that matches the quality, consistency and repeatability of
Imation's industry-standard Matchprint analog proofs.

"The Matchprint Laser Proof system eliminates the proofing gap for CTP
printing with a filmless, digital halftone contract quality proof
generated from the same RIP that produces the plate," said Barb
Cederberg, general manager of printing and proofing products, Imation.
"With Imation's Matchprint brand as an industry standard in
conventional contract proofing, Matchprint Laser Proof systems provide
the ideal transition to digital contract proofing for shops doing
computer-to-plate printing." About Matchprint Laser Proof

Imation Matchprint Laser Proof's design is based on IR thermal imaging
technology and a new formulation of a Matchprint pigment-based color
system that results in an excellent match to press in a digital
halftone proof. The proof is a high-quality replicating dot-to-dot
fidelity to the image that is sent to the printing plate, significantly
reducing variability. In many applications, eliminating multiple RIPs
from the digital workflow can save users time and reduce error rates by
allowing a single RIP for both the plate and the proof. The result is a
digital halftone proofing system that delivers quality equal to or
better than traditional lithographic proofing methods.

Imation's Matchprint Laser Proof uses the same class of color pigments
as the conventional Matchprint III proofing system. Used with
Presstek's PEARLhdp and Creo's Trendsetter Spectrum and Proofsetter
Spectrum, Matchprint Laser Proofs deliver all the features of
traditional proofs, including color and content fidelity, traps and
overprints, representative screening and quality in contone and fine
line details. The proofs are filmless, non-photographic, require no
chemical processing and are insensitive to normal sunlight.

Imation supplies Matchprint Laser Proof media to accommodate two-,
four- and eight-page presses. The PEARLhdp (four-page model) will image
a proof up to 20-inches by 29 1/8-inches on a 23-inch by 30-inch sheet.
The Creo Trendsetter Spectrum and Proofsetter Spectrum are available in
four-page and eight-page models and image proofs up to 30-inches by
40-inch sheet. About Imation
