I don't know. I'm assumed the price to exercise was not cheap and he sold enough to cover the cost of exercising. I could be wrong because that's a lot of money.

My understanding (but I'm not an accountant) is that the gain in the
stock option is taxable as income in the year of exercise (This may only be the case in high tax brackets where people are subject to AMT). If anyone knows, you might comment. I'll ask my accountant in March when I do my taxes.
