A development and marketing agreement with BEA Systems, Inc. and
the planned integration of BEA's transaction middleware product,
BEA TUXEDO. By integrating and bundling BEA TUXEDO with its full
line of enterprise applications, PeopleSoft will enable its applications to connect and interoperate using two primary communication paradigms: request/reply (synchronous Remote
Procedure Calls, or RPCs), and publish/subscribe messaging. Along
with its strength in handling high-volume transaction processing environments, BEA TUXEDO will significantly enhance PeopleSoft's delivery of globally implemented, distributed applications

PeopleSoft?s Three-tier Architecture
All PeopleSoft applications that are release 7.0 and above include
a three-tier processing option with integrated BEA TUXEDO middleware. By using BEA TUXEDO on the PeopleSoft application server, users
are able to accommodate very large volumes of concurrent users with robust load-balancing and fail-over recovery capabilities, providing
for continuous operations. This architecture provides an efficient split between the application server and the client, thereby increasing the speed, performance, and security of each
transaction.

The Client: The client can be any workstation with abrowser that supports Java, such as browsers provided by Netscape, Microsoft and others. The only installation required for PeopleSoft?s internet solution is the browser itself, all other components are downloaded
at the time of execution including the PeopleSoft Web client. The Web
client runs our universal applications and communicates with the application server using BEA?s JOLT or Java OnLine Transaction processing. The Web Client will use caching to optimize network performance.
The Application Server: The application server is managedby Tuxedo from BEA. Tuxedo has long been regarded as theindustry?s highest performing, most reliable and open teleprocessing monitor. This gives the PeopleSoft internet solution enterprise-strength scalability and performance. In addition it provides fail-over recovery and load balancing. Tuxedo?s messaging capability provides secure communications through the use of encryption technology. The PeopleSoft application service running under Tuxedo provides the business rules and workflow capabilities of PeopleSoft?s enterprise applications.

Thin Client Option: Windows and Java Clients
With the highly flexible PeopleSoft 7 architecture, developers can create a single application definition, then deploy the application
on both Windows and Java clients, without the need for third-party
web development tools. The new Java client makes it possible for
customers to deploy PeopleSoft applications on the World Wide Web.
The Java client can be downloaded on demand from the server to the client desktop. It is deployable with Java-enabled browsers on multiple platforms including the newest network computers and can be connected via intranets, extranets, or the Internet. The Java client takes advantage of PeopleSoft?s new three-tier architecture by using the BEA Jolt middleware product for connectivity to the PeopleSoft application server.

Integration Solution for Financial Services
PeopleSoft has partnered with New Era of Networks (NEON) to license
and market NEON Business EventManager, an integration application
that links PeopleSoft Financial Services applications with disparate systems across the organization. Business EventManager automates the integration of multiple platforms, centralize business logic, and provide business user control.
"For companies replacing their back office systems, the integration
of existing transaction processing systems is a huge challenge,"
said Martin Mackay, global industry strategy director for
PeopleSoft's financial services business unit. "Business
