"Sun's Sparq and Solaris stations are high-end niche products for graphics and internet stuff."

I would disagree about Sun as a niche vendor - Sun is the #1 selling Unix Vendor surpassing IBM, HP, DEC, etc. Their entry level servers and workstations are priced well within the range of Wintel, grew 75% year to year and on the high end scale all the way up to 256 processors in a cluster.

Solaris is a 64 bit OS that offers Mainframe class scalability and reliability driving Amazon.com, and most commercial web sites, ISP's and search engines- yes lots of "Internet Stuff"

Ultrasparc II far surpasses G3 and Xeon (pentium II) - it is a 64 bit processor and can be clustered up to 64 CPUs in a single domain.

IBM and Sun have already agreed to collaborate on Java, JavaOS and the next generation version of Unix.

Scott McNealy had a deal on the table with Apple in '94 - but it was pulled by the board.
