Shorting 6 million shares so you can purchase 98 million shares at a lower price makes good business sense. The rise in price a month ago on takeover rumors might have delayed a deal that was in the works. The buyer would then wait to have the stock fall and might actually short it to drive the price down. Don't know if this is true but at least it is plausible.
