Can you explain why AC3 decoding or encoding would be important for a sound card? Perhaps I am missing something.

This card provides 4 channels of discrete audio. This is superior to AC3 encoding.

I do understand that AC3 decoding would be useful for people who want to listen to CDs that are encoded with AC3 on their PC. But, realistically, this is primarly a casual activity - a small percentage of people will listen to music while working on their PC, using their CD drive as a substitute for a walkman.

AC3 ENcoding? Why? That would make sense for a professional-level card that some people (NOT the average consumer) might use to create AC3-encoded CDs. That feature belongs in a professional card that is part of a sound-editing system, not a consumer-level card.

The primary use of this card will be for game-playing. The 4-channel discrete circuitry will provide a superior experience for users, assuming that game makers write their games to the appropriate standards in order to take advantage of it.
