Pat, I also went to Internet World in New York, and like Ed went staight to the GTE booth. As Ed said, they had no demonstration or set up on ADSL. When I asked they sent me to someone who said that it had been too difficult to set up in New York because it involved the central office, but he gave me a handout from their public affairs department. It was 3 pages and I will share some excepts with you:
"Summary: GTE begins second phase of lightning-fast Internet access trial in Redmond, Wash. Expanded Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) trial to include up to 100 area firms and 50 additional Microsoft employees."
At the end of their handout it says "the company expects to begin commercially offering the warp-speed service in several of its key markets in the first half of 1997. The estimated price of the service will range between $40 to $100 per month, depending on the class of service offered." They spoke of Westell's FlexCap, & Amati's Overture 4 plus beginning using "Amati's Overture 8 modem, the fastest modem commercially available". The national contact for this press release was Bill Kula, at GTE, 972-718-6924.
If New York's telephone network is anything like its highway system, New York has a lot of potholes & bottlenecks to repair. Like Jim, I want my DMT now. Guess I'll just have to be patient, or move to Redmond. |
