Rebels enter oil town in west of Kabila's Congo

KINSHASA, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Rwandan-backed rebels have captured a key oil town and a naval base in the west of Democratic Republic of the Congo, diplomats and industry sources said on Thursday.

A senior official of President Laurent Kabila's government said, however, fighting was continuing in both the port of Muanda on the former Zaire's small Atlantic coast, close to Angola's enclave of Cabinda, and the naval base of Banana.

The industry sources in touch with the region said Muanda fell on Wednesday and that two Americans working for a Chevron oil facility there were in the hands of the rebels. ''We have information that the rebels have captured both the town of Muanda and the naval base at Banana,'' one of the industry sources said.

But the senior Interior Ministry official said reinforcements of Kabila loyalist troops had been sent in and were now in a position to take control. ''We are fighting very seriously there. There is a big battle and we are in a position of force,'' he added.
