I don't think that Adobe is going the way of mass merchandising if that's your concern. A company named Aldus, who was once Adobe's main competition, tried to do that with only a modicum of success (Adobe purchased Aldus sometime back).

I believe, the key to Adobe's success is in spinning off what it does best in new directions.

Case in point: Adobe Acrobat.
The user creates a document called a Portable Document Format (PDF). This file is device-independant. The file (very small in size) can be attached to an E-mail and sent. In my industry, where file size can range from 50 Mg and up, you can see what a boon it is to me. I send a large graphics file to my client, who is more likely than not in a Wintel environment and they can not only read it, but print it out in living color. This has implications that reach far beyond the graphic designer. A lot pre-press and printing concerns are looking at this technology as the next wave.

My point. Adobe developed the Postscript language that allow us to start printing documents on the laserwriter in 1984 and they are still building on that fundamental.

Hang in there!
