Ericsson strategy - Ericsson seems to like to use politics and peer pressure, and I would view the on-going trials as more of the same. The more trials they run, the more pressure they bring to bear. After all, all the companies and governments that participate in a trial are much more likely to support the Ericsson position.

PS It's not clear to me that Ericsson necessarily has a backup plan. History is replete with examples of entities which had no backup plan beyond force. That said, it is of course possible that they have a backup plan, but I can't see any possibilities that particularly scare me.
