If Ericsson really becomes next Motanic that's more than OK with me - maube it would teach those "we were a major European phone company already in 1890" snobs some humility. But accusing Europe of protectionism just because we picked a common standard doesn't wash. There are more than 20 countries in Europe - what were we supposed to do? Allow 20 different standards and then watch the damn yankees to laugh all the way to the bank like they did when the fragmented European PC industry kicked the bucket?

Just this once Europe got its act together and gave European companies the luxury that American companies take for granted: a unified market of 250 million consumers. Nokia comes from a country with 5 million people. This company has watched Motorola use its huge home market and strong ties with US government to give it a totally undeserved competitive edge. I think Nokia deserved this one break they got with GSM and they have shown that they were worthy of it.

Let's not forget who's the real all time David here - not Qualcomm with its easy access to venture capital and cosy ties with West Coast high tech community. But a small Finnish company who showed that the spirit of Winter War is still alive in information age by overcoming lack of capital, minuscule home market and hostile Wall Street analysts.
