Slightly off topic, yet adsl.
I've got US West offering a free modem and nic card if I sign up for the adsl service, soon -- the salesperson says by Friday, the literature says by mid September...? ($40/mo, still need an ISP)
I've been unable to find a competing offer and my impression is that I have to use US West. Is this correct?
I also don't understand why I need a nic and am wondering what other bottlenecks will emerge if/when I switch to adsl. Right? I switch to adsl and then I still have too many slow pages due to the server..
Having been an amtx investor, it's interesting to finally see an adsl rollout. My first impressions are that it feels a bit rushed and not well understood/explained. (I apparently thought I knew more than I do) Plus, all the conversations/stats about whose modem is better, but when it makes it to me it's just, 'here, have a modem'.
My ISP said more than 1 computer can use the modem and that I can have a fax machine always 'on' but she didn't know how to do it.
I get a dedicated IP address, which is 'good', but she didn't know why.
I see the need for a nic if using two computers, but for one? I guess it's translating the adsl into tcp/ip?
It's a bit frustrating not knowing which component is doing what, and not having a competing offer to look at.
Any help/usefull urls appreciated. -Kevin
PS. one more thing: my isp doesn't have web page access for dsl accounts yet.., so I also have to give that up, or change isp which I don't want to do. PPS. my isp's dsl account allows 500mb transfer a month, then an extra fee for the next 500. I didn't like that. Once we get into audio/video that won't be hard to surpass. |
