I read an article awhile ago about intel having optimization labs running with developers so they can optimize their code for merced. Now I guess we all know why. From what I've read, it seems most of the performance gains from merced and McKinley are the result of improved manufacturing processes and not an improved architecture. Alpha can be redesigned to use the same manufacturing process (.18, .13, copper, soi, etc.) The alpha 21264 is still on a .35 micron process and currently runs at 600Mhz. It's a good thing intel is populated by engineers, and not marketing people like compaq and microsoft, or else a FUD machine would be cranking right about now. I won't speculate on performance, but really don't see where EPIC is that much of an improvement over RISC.
