Scientific-Atlanta to Supply TCI with Digital Set-Tops and
Related Network Equipment - 09:19 a.m. Aug 06, 1998 Eastern

ATLANTA, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA),
announced today that the National Digital Television Center (NDTC), currently a
subsidiary of TCI Ventures Group, LLC, has entered into an agreement with
Scientific-Atlanta that allows for the purchase of substantial quantities of advanced
digital set-top devices and supporting network equipment. Terms of the agreement
were not disclosed.

This marks the first commitment by Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) for itself and
its affiliates for Scientific-Atlanta's advanced digital set-top devices and the network
that supports them. Shipments are scheduled to begin later this year for an initial
deployment in Salt Lake City, home of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, where TCI
serves 190,000 subscribers. Other commitments are expected to follow.

"We are excited to have Scientific-Atlanta as a supplier in our roll-out of advanced
digital set-top devices including high-speed Internet 'watch-and- surf' capabilities
based on DOCSIS cable modem technology," said David P. Beddow, senior vice

digital set-tops as well as Explorer 2000s."

The Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 2000 advanced digital set-top, which will be deployed
initially, has high-throughput, two-way communications and sufficient processing
