To put it simply: you can sell short on the shares you own (short against the box) at the current price and close you position in the next calender year. The tax consequences will be borne out next year (when you close the position). This technique is often used to defer capital gain taxes while locking in profits at a perceived high level.

If Congress (with the help of the Prez) does act to reduce capital gain taxes, this trick will be all the more appealing...
