More spending on public schools is not going to solve the problem.
And the local officials are doing their best to make sure the
private school voucher experiment will fail also. If one was
truly interested in seeing pupils succeed, they would not be
placing the various restraints on the school voucher experiment.

I would have to add that the parents have the responsibility of
oversight of their kids and their kids' education. Perhaps, parents
should be required to participate in their school's PTA or other
activities.

<< As for the schools, they've been dumbed down so long to accomodate
mediocre students. Both the school administrators and the
politicians keep trying superficial fixes, such as "open
classrooms", politically correct textbooks, prayer in school,
head start, etc. They don't fix the basic problem of a poorly
taught core curriculum and unprepared students. >>

As I said, earlier, they will need entry exams for schools to allow
entry of those that are prepared. Students who aren't prepared need
to be in different educational or training programs. This is already
common practice in most other countries. They need to get rid of the
tenure system and require a performance-based retention system. By
requiring entry exams of students entering a program, it will make for
a fairer evaluation of a teacher by being able to identify the
qualifications of her class at the start.
