The three players involved were Richard Nixon, Alger Hiss and Whitaker Chambers. Whitaker Chambers was a member of the Communist Party who had accused Alger Hiss, a State Dept official, with being a member of the Communist Party. Richard Nixon was then a young Congressman on the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. He made his reputation as a staunch anti-Communist by aggressively pursuing the investigation of Alger Hiss.
