Question for you: Any thoughts on other FC plays?

Nope. I've been looking for the FC equivalent of Adaptec (SCSI) but the economics of the chip and chipset markets are so bad that I decided to narrow my search to the vendors that will benefit from the inevitable move by corporations to outsource their storage networking needs to one supplier. Cisco has been, and continues to be the greatest beneficiary of this trend in the data networking industry.

One observation so far, the harder I look the harder it is for me to escape the conclusion that IB-friggin-M is the prototypical enterprise storage vendor. Big Blue has it all -- components, services, systems, integration, etc. It's a good thing that they have this long history -- that you referred to -- of locking their customers into expensive and proprietary technology road maps that creates opportunities for the likes of independents like EMC (mainframe storage) and Storagetek (mainframe backup). EMC and Storagetek -- now, that's a merger I'd like to see and invest in.

P.S. Do you have any details on IBM's recently announced $1 billion additional investment in their disk drive biz?
