Western Pacific Mining's Subsidiary Granted Several Prospecting Licenses

QUEBEC, QUEBEC--Western Pacific Mining Exploration Inc.
("WestPac") announces that its wholly owned subsidiary Acabit S.I.
has been granted several prospecting licenses in the Solomon
Islands. The prospecting licenses cover several epithermal gold
and base metal prospects. The licenses and the creation of a
subsidiary are subject to regulatory approval.

Watts Griffis McOuat Limited ("WGM"), a Toronto, Canada based
geological and consulting company, has agreed to manage the
exploration program in the Solomon Islands. WGM has put together
a comprehensive very high quality exploration program from
assessment reports and published data. The exploration program
will be conducted from a 180 foot long ship equipped with a
geochemical laboratory, and a helicopter. WGM estimates that
equipment and crews will mobilize to the Solomon Islands in
January 1997 with field work starting immediately. Short surface
sampling campaigns will precede diamond drilling of the gold
prospects.

WestPac and WGM have identified Fauro Island as their first target
area. These gold prospects are known to exist from previous work,
each measuring 1.5 km in length. These prospects are located
within a 10 km2 area of widespread geochemical gold anomalies.
Detailed sampling, including geochemical sampling, rock sampling
and trenching, have yielded in altered volcanics and intrusive
rocks, results of 1.6 to 15 ppm gold, 1.3 to 8.9 ppm in soils, up
to 4.4 g Au/t over 18 m m and 2.6 Au/t over 21 m in chip samples,
18 ppm gold over 5 m in trenches, and 14 m at 1 g Au/t in diamond
drill core.

WGM is still compiling data on the Fauro Island and the other
prospecting licenses.

WGM believes that these prospects have an above average potential
to host epithermal gold deposits similar to Giant Lihir deposit in
Papua New Guinea.
