about? "

I'd worry if I was a DEC shareholder.

DEC has an excellent product with their ALPHA chips. Unfortunately, the Alpha chip was introduced in 1992 or 1993, about 10 years after the IBM PC/Intel/Microsoft Dynamo got started.

They (DEC) have been trying, nearly single handedly, to convert an entire industry to their Alpha chip, when their competition (Intel) has been able to deliver products of "near" comparable performance at reasonable prices, and capable of running the VAST SEA of SOFTWARE for WINTEL machines.

For "b*lls-to-the-wall" SERVER applications, the Alpha chip does really well (forgoing their BIG floating point advantage over Intel's chips - since FPUs are rarely used in server applications).

However, Intel has cleverly designed SMP capability directly into their Pentium Pro chips, and they are making mutiple CPU Pentium Pro servers the preferred platform for economical Server/Internet deployment.
