Steve, I think that last two DELL's I ordered were delivered for about $75 in shipping costs. That may be high. I'm not sure. Dell gives you the option to let them pick the best way, so it often isn't quoted to my recollection.
If DELL continued to produce it, it would fall below $1000. However, I think the 300 is on the way out with the 266, because DELL's customers are going to prefer the faster models that cost a little more.
It is true that DELL is now going after the home users, but they're going after the experienced ones. These people aren't going to want sub-$1000 capabilities. If they do, DELL isn't worried about selling to them. Sounds cocky, but it's better for margins if DELL stays away from that trap.
As Michael Dell said in response to a question about CPQ's business heading towards sub-$1000 PCs to improve margins, mouse pads have a ninety percent margin. That doesn't mean DELL's going to start selling mouse pads.
