There is no required time period in which to close a short (including a short against the box), but you do have to pay interest on the short (although you have the use of the money from the shares sold short) and, if the stock soars upward against you, there might be a margin call from the broker, as there are requirements that you have so much money on deposit to protect against just that scenerio (soaring stock that you sold short). Shorting against the box would not have that risk.

Theoretically, you could hold a short position forever, provided the stock did not soar against you and provided you maintained enough in the margin account and paid the interest.
