I think I addressed the first part of your post in my #reply-5445347 to Bob Sturgeon. Just a quick reiteration: If you don't like the system, then change it at a fundamental level.

I think I agree with you that the issue of forgiveness is not relevant to the death penalty issue.

I think the fundamental issue is what are the rights of a society; in particular, the rights of the government as the embodiment of the society to encroach on an individual's rights. The death penalty (or even life-long imprisonment) is an issue of society protecting itself.

Perhaps the big question is whether religion (or religious bias) should be considered relevant to the death penalty issue. Ah... but then... should religion (or religious bias) be relevant to the abortion issue?
