Mqurice and Surfer Mike,
Further details on the Sprint deal: Per minute price above the 100 free minutes is 35 cents. No contract required. I guess I should mention that this deal is a "limited time offer," I believe you normally get only 20 free minutes for this monthly rate. (The deal is available through August 9th.)

The phone cost $99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. The QCP-1920 is single-mode, so no roaming to the analog system. As I said, I didn't care so much about this, so decided to go with a less expensive, PCS-only phone. If my wife ever tries to make a call in an area without PCS coverage, though, I may hear about the demerits of this decision ;-) The availability of roaming depends just on the phone, you can get the same rate plan with a dual-mode phone to allow roaming to analog.

Maurice, in your earlier post you wrote: " The global standard which can be established is the lower bit rate system promulgated by Qualcomm Incorporated and others." You really mean lower chip rate, right? I don't think the achievable data rate planned for cdma2000 will be any slower than for W-CDMA.

Also: "Maybe the enemy is 'us' rather than 'me'." Have you ever heard of the comic strip 'Pogo'? A quotation from that strip became a familiar bit of American pop culture a couple of decades ago: "We have met the enemy, and he is us!"
