While we're on the subject, how about this example:

1) Buy 100 INTC @ 100 (a while ago)
2) Sell "short against the box at today's open (say 141)
3) Close the short position at the close at 137.

Pay capital gains on what? $400? $4100? $3700?

What is cost basis of net position?
