I must be confused about a naked short. Isn't it selling short a stock that you neither have nor have borrowed? Or does there actually have to be a buyer for the other side of the entry, meaning that a company with, say, 2MM shares outstanding that's been shorted heavily by so-called market makers could actually have 4MM trading, half of that being virtual shares because they've been created by the heavy shorting?

Also, how does anyone know how many shares of a BB stock have been shorted? There's no regulatory body that reports on shorts, as I understand it (and I wouldn't make book on my understanding).
