Chuzz-
(I am reposting for those new to the thread)...
One of the first things that CEO Joel Kirschner of Micron did (after he became CEO six weeks ago) was announce that Micron will no longer be competing against Dell in large corporate markets......Kirschner previously had worked at Dell (and, subsequently, a stint at a software company) before becoming CEO at Micron...
Now, this is a guy who is intimately familiar with Dell's model, is head of a company who ALSO HAS a direct model in place and functioning, and not only is afraid to compete with Dell, but refuses to do so! One would think that his background (and the company's organization) would put him in the BEST position to transform Micron, and take away (or at least nibble at) some of the business that Dell is currently winning....After all, as Dell's critics love to state, the B-T-O, J-I-T model is easy to implement and execute......HP, CPQ, and IBM arestarting to do it....Dell's days of advantage are numbered....
Conclusion: It is not enough to thoroughly understand Dell's model, or to be in a position to imitate it.....Dell's advantage(s) are simply too great, and they keep pushing the envelope to make them even greater .........Question: Where does this put competitors who do not even have a direct model and/or the ability to come close to emulating Dell's operations......In more trouble then Micron, I concur....
Actions like Kirschner's make me feel awfully good about Dell's future! |
