What I was saying-apparently ineffectively--is that it's the ability to not buy into the romanticism of collective thought and the denial of self, or the total rejection of one's obligations to others (… la Ayn Rand) and the pursuit of only selfish goals, that is healthy. These are not either-or moral propositions the way they are so often treated here but are the conventions of groups. A really healthy personality begins with self and moves outward as a a part of the group but obeying the law of his own voice- deliberately, morally.
If you see that as gray, then so be it. I just don't find the collective voice compelling enough to change my shade to either black or white. Intellectually or emotionally you might sway me temporarily but that which is me returns to gray in the ensuing silence.
So yes--
Gray I was born,
Gray I must be,
For gray is the color of me-me-me.
